The search for a man who disappeared after apparently jumping into wild water off Sydney's eastern suburbs has again been suspended, shortly after a woman's body was found in the same area.
Emergency workers on Tuesday recovered the body from close to where witnesses said a person had gone missing in rough seas.
PolAir, Marine Rescue and Surf Life Saving NSW were among those who set out at first light on Tuesday to search the area after reports a man had disappeared into white water off south Bondi on Monday afternoon.
The body of the woman, believed to be in her 20s, was recovered off Dover Heights on Tuesday afternoon and police say she is yet to be formally identified.
The search has since been suspended for the man, who a witness said had jumped into the waves from rocks.
"He just jumped in when the waves were going out and when the waves came in again he went under and couldn't keep up," he told AAP on Monday.
Then he just disappeared."
Police could not confirm reports in Fairfax Media that the man was a US citizen, studying at the University of Sydney.
The search for the missing man will recommence at first light on Wednesday
