SUSPECTED herdsmen have reportedly killed a 45-year-old farmer and hunter, Mr. Monday Nwadei, at Ossissa community, Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State. The deceased, it was gathered, was on his way from his plantain farm when he was allegedly shot dead by the herdsmen, weekend. Sources said Nwadei had unknowingly passed through a hideout where the herdsmen were holding hostage an abducted lawyer and one other victim. Reacting to the incident, immediate younger brother of the deceased, Mr. Augustin Nwadei, said: “At the moment, we are at a loss on the next step to take, but we have reported the case to the Police.”
Contacted, Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Celestine Kalu, said the case was under investigation, advising communities to be more vigilant. “Those who have residing herdsmen in their communities should liaise with them to forestall future occurrences,” she said. Meanwhile, erstwhile Majority Leader of Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Aneke Ifemeni, expressed shock at the incident, saying the nefarious activities of the herdsmen, if not checked, could lead to hunger. He said: “They bring cows to the south to destroy our crops and kill our people, nobody is going to farm again for fear of being killed by herdsmen. “Between Ossissa and Isselegu junction, I had encountered them when I was travelling to my village, Onicha-Ukwuani; they opened fire on me, but God saw me through.”
