Gunmen attack NTA Onitsha office, burn down building

Acting Manager of the station, Mr Chris Nwigwe, told newsmen in Onitsha that the incident occurred at about 1.40 a.m. “Some armed men tried to attack the staff on duty but only succeeded in burning down the Star Times building,” he said, adding that no life was lost in the attack.

An eyewitness said that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was planted at the security post of the station, while tyres were set around the premises to set the station ablaze. “There was a gun duel between the armed men and policemen who are manning the office.

New: Boko Haram taunts Buhari, threatens more carnage in new video

Boko Haram has released a new video without its embattled leader Abubakar Shekau, lending weight to claims by the Nigerian army he had been gravely wounded in an air strike.

The 13-minute video posted on YouTube late Tuesday shows an unidentified man in a flowing white robe and a sword dangling by his side presiding over Eid prayers in a mosque.

Hundreds of poorly fed villagers and children, who are apparently Boko Haram supporters, are seen in the video filmed.

The man says he is representing Shekau, who had allegedly been ousted by the Islamic State to which Boko Haram pledged allegiance in March 2015.
“My brethren, today is Eid ..in the Islamic Caliphate under the leadership of Abubakar Shekau, may Allah protect him,” he says, speaking in the local Hausa language.

The Nigerian army claimed on August 23 Shekau had been seriously wounded in the shoulder in an air raid in which several commanders were killed.

“We convey our Eid greetings to our brethren all over the world under the Islamic Caliphate and especially our leader Abubakar Shekau, may Allah protect him,” the man in the video says.

He then taunts the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying Boko Haram would fight on despite a military crackdown, adding: “No retreat, no surrender.”

It was not immediately clear if the video, which was technically superior to previous ones, was shot in Boko Haram’s Sambisa forest stronghold in the northern state of Borno or elsewhere.

Chris Brown flouts police on Instagram in standoff

Troubled singer Chris Brown on Tuesday took to Instagram to upbraid police outside his door after officers responded to a woman’s distress call.

The Los Angeles Police Department said that officers from homicide and robbery division, which deals with celebrity cases, headed to Brown’s address after a woman called for help at 3:11 am (1031 GMT).

Brown hours later was still inside his home and posted videos on Instagram in which he sought to ally himself with the Black Lives Matter movement against police brutality.

‘Governor can’t be impeached,’ PDP says

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has said Governor Nyesom Wike cannot be impeached.
The party made the assertion in response to comments made by former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the state, Dakuku Peterside that Wike would not finish his tenure.
The Rivers PDP’s remarks were made by state Publicity Secretary, Samuel Nwanosike while speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt on Monday, August 29, 2016.
Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike
“Dakuku Peterside should know that the governor cannot be impeached because in the state House of Assembly, the PDP is in the majority. The issue of the governor’s regime coming to an end cannot come up,” Nwanosike said.
“Governor Wike is using the resources at his disposal to develop the state and that is why he will continue to enjoy the support of the people. They can try as much as they can, they cannot do anything to Governor Wike.
“Rivers State is PDP. We have got up to the Supreme Court and we won. So, to say that Wike’s administration will soon come to an end does not make any meaning to us,” he added.
The state Publicity Secretary of the APC, Chris Finebone, however dismissed Nwanosike’s comments saying that “Rivers belongs to the APC and will remain APC.”
